The Beginner’s Checklist For Promoting Your Business on Social Media

With so many blogs, webinars, and YouTube videos talking about how to increase sales and grow your business online, it can be difficult to know where to start if you are an SME (a small to medium enterprise ranging between 50 and 250 employees, click here for more information) or if you are not familiar with the online world. Here are some simple tips to help you make that initial step and start promoting your business online through social media.


Set SMART Goals

Whether you are looking to drive sales or you simply want to grow your social media presence, SMART goals are a must. Put simply, they will help you focus and hone in on what exactly it is you want to achieve, reducing the risk of distractions. SMART Goals are:

  • Specific – What exactly do you want to achieve?
  • Measurable – How will you measure your success?
  • Attainable – Is your goal even possible?
  • Realistic – Is your goal realistic? Be careful not to aim too high (or too low!)
  • Timely – Set yourself a deadline, so you will know when you have reached the finish line.

An example of a SMART goal would be: “Increase our new Facebook page likes by 50%, from 100 to 150 by the 1st November”. This goal is specific as it refers to what exactly needs to be achieved, it is measurable, it is attainable and realistic, and is timely as it sets a deadline by which to achieve the goal.

Next, you will need to plan how you will achieve this goal. Depending on what you hope to achieve, this may require some research.

Less is more – meet your customers where they are

It may be tempting to set up every type of social media account that you can think of, but try to avoid this. There is no benefit to having an Instagram account if your customers predominantly use Twitter.

The best way to find out where your customers hang out and go for information online, is to ask them. Be sure to ask a reasonable size group and ensure that your group is including, including new and existing customers, young and old, men and women, professionals and student etc.

Once you have established where your customers are and you have set up your accounts, be sure to maintain each profile, keep each account up-to-date and post differently on each platform. Some of your customers may follow you on multiple platforms, so avoid showing them the same content across all of your platforms.

Reflect and analyse

This is possibly the most important tip. Reflect on what you have done and analyse your performance regularly. Did a specific style of post do particularly well? Why not post content similar to this again? If your customers like seeing images rather than text, post more images!

Test – Push the boundaries

Push the boundaries of what you can do with your platform, try posting at different times of the day, different days of the week, different styles of post, branded images versus non-branded etc.
